Description
Inspired by the Button Eyes scene from the movie Coraline, I created this new locket design! In this scene Coraline receives a small box with two buttons, a needle and tread. If she chooses to let ‘The Other Mother’ sew on the buttons, she will be bound to the ‘Other World’. To me, the other world stands for the memories that are perfect and romanticized. A world that is just a little more colourful and exciting than reality because that’s what memories tend to do to us. My hope is that, whenever you wear this design, you allow yourself to drift off and revel in your beautiful memories.
The front of the locket shows an assembly of silver buttons and sewing tools paired with a bright red garnet. Within the locket you’ll find a silver frame, which you can remove to secure a photograph and there’s enough room to house some other small treasures too!
The locket is handmade out of sterling silver and a touch of 14k rose gold. It comes on a 45cm/ 18 inch facetted rolo necklace.
THE OTHER MOTHER
I essentially grew up with three mothers. My mom and my two grandmothers. A Spanish one from my father’s side and an Indonesian one from my mother’s side. I experienced an explosion of culture, stories, soul food and unwavering love. They created an idyllic universe which felt safe and comforting. One that was always there when we faced the storms of life together.
I recently lost my last living grandmother and during this grieving process I decided to create a collection inspired by my memories of them as ‘the other mothers’. Each piece tells a small part of my story, with a sprinkle of Coraline* aesthetic. The designs are meant to hold on to memories and give comfort.
Little mending kits for broken hearts, precious stones to dry your tears but most importantly something to remind you of a warm and loving place.
